For the best and complete experience of the Monastery Route Lolland-Falster, Naturlandet recommends the guidebook “The Danish Monastery Route: Lolland-Falster”, published by Eksistensen in 2017. The book can be purchased at the Pilgrim House in Maribo.
Here you can find detailed and inspiring descriptions of the individual stages of the route, plenty of photos and descriptions of the many historical points of interest along the route, as well as practical information about accommodation options and more.
With its wide range of themes and a route through varied and beautiful nature, the Monastery Route can be used in several ways.
For the regular tourist, there is enough content in the route to select what particularly interests one. This applies to those who place the main emphasis on the hiking element, and there is plenty to experience for both the culture tourist and nature lover.
By allowing monasteries and churches to determine the route and destination, the Monastery Route project opens up a special opportunity to revive an old tradition of pilgrimages, but reformed into meditative walks on modern terms and according to the needs of contemporary people.
The Monastery Route is based on the main idea that the inner journey should not take place in a vacuum or be created by one's own inner consciousness. The inner journey presupposes an outer journey with a clear content. On the outer journey along the Monastery Route, you encounter the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Christian church. It is a key component of national and pan-European identity. It is also the foundation for vibrant communities that gather in church houses for worship and devotion throughout the year and on life's significant occasions.
In relation to Christianity and the church, no user of the Monastery Route should feel lured into a constraining dogmatic system or a compelling community of beliefs. Here, only openness and freedom apply. The Danish Monastery Route is organized with respect for the fact that it is always up to each individual to choose the why and how of their journey.
