The Øerstien path goes through the former large raw material extraction area, where sand, gravel, grit, and stone were excavated from 1935 to 1974. A total of 2.3 million cubic meters of material were removed from the 115-hectare area at that time.
You can still see the old raw material pits as elongated parallel lakes separated by narrow strips of land that were necessary to transport the excavated materials to the gravel plant.
The route goes through very varied nature from marsh areas over birch forest, down to the beach and back over the fine heathland.
