Sønder Thise - Eskær

The starting point of the route is the village of Sønder Thise. From here, the path leads down towards the fjord along a gravel road. The landscape towards the fjord is beautiful and hilly. The route continues south along the beach. At the outlet of Sønder Thise Stream, the path turns onto Eskjærvej into Eskær Forest, which belongs to the estate of Eskær. Eskær is an old manor house, whose history can be traced back to 1328. The current main building at Eskær was built by Mads Hastrup in 1761, who owned Eskær from 1750-1768. The estate came to the Schütte family in 1869, where the 4th generation are now the owners of the farm. Gudmund Schütte had the main building thoroughly restored around 1915, and the buildings stand today largely as they were built in 1761. North of the outlet of Sønder Thise Stream into the fjord lay Eskær Brickworks, which was closed down in 1905. On the site, a significant find from the Stone Age was made in 1920. Fourteen hearths with a considerable amount of stone tools and pottery shards were found, as well as the skeleton of a man. According to Gudmund Schütte, who was on a trip abroad at the time, the find was not professionally examined or reported to the National Museum. Upon his return, Schütte kept the antiquities in his private "museum" at Eskær. From Eskjærvej, the route goes back north to Sønder Thise through the forest via footpaths. The route is marked with blue arrows. NOTE: The part of the route that runs along the beach can be difficult to pass at high water levels in the fjord.
