The tour goes across Fanø, its nature and history. Fanø is characterized as a barrier island in the Wadden Sea by rows of dunes to the west, alternating with long wet dune hollows. The central part of the island is a more diffuse mosaic of heathlands, small lakes, bogs, and plantations. And on the backside of the island, you will find salt marshes, or as they are called in the Wadden Sea area, marsh areas.
Fanø Plantation, is today 1421 ha of nature that stretches from the North Sea to the Wadden Sea. It is an important recreational area that creates a marked variation from the otherwise very open nature with extensive heaths, dunes, and beaches in the middle of the island. The plantation is becoming a mosaic of closed forest areas on the high ground, mixed with open spaces such as lakes, meadows, and pastures in the lower areas. The hiking trail winds through the entire landscape, offering an overview of nature on a Wadden Sea island.
