Nature trail

1. Strandparken was inaugurated in 1980 as an artificially created nature and outdoor area that also functions as flood protection. Rare animals and plants live in the lakes and on the beach meadows. Among them are the shorebird curlew, the green-spotted toad, and the May orchid – a Danish orchid. The green-spotted toad is light gray to olive gray and has large, green, wavy spots with a black edge. It can resemble camouflage clothing. Its croaking sounds almost like a whistle – hence the green-spotted toad is also called the whistling toad.

2. Ishøj Nature Park is steeped in cultural history dating back to the Stone Age, when Tranegilde Bog was a fjord. At 14 information boards in the area, one can get factual information about royal hunting, poachers, amphibians, and birds. In the Wildlife Park, you can get close to the impressive highland cattle. Along the stream, herons stand year-round and fish with their spear-shaped beaks. The stream creates a vital connection for eels and sea trout between the lakes and the sea.

3. The birds of the agricultural land thrive among small forests and ponds. Most well-known - and loved - is probably the skylark. Already in February, it can be heard high up in the air, where it can be difficult to spot. It is easier to see the corvids such as jackdaws, rooks, and gray crows, which are often seen in large flocks.

4. Lille Vejleå provided water to several watermills in the Middle Ages – including Pile Mill. Today, it is primarily animals and plants that benefit from the water. Along the stream, alder trees grow that can tolerate extra water. In spring, the characteristic male flowers can be seen growing together in long flower stalks. Further up the stream is Thorsbro Waterworks. The 100-year-old building is a small work of art that today is set up as a museum for water supply.

5. Benzonsdal Manor stands majestically in the open and protected manor landscape. From the waterworks, one reaches the estate via the old linden avenue. Just before the private driveway to Benzonsdal, there is on the right an impressive burial mound from the Bronze Age. On the fire engine mound between the forest and the village, there is an opportunity to enjoy the contents of a coffee or lunch basket. From here, the nature trail continues along the stream with a magnificent view.
