The blue route is the shortest and most urban of the three routes in Bælum Sønderskov. The route runs along the edge of the oldest part of the forest. Like most of Himmerland, the Bælum area was almost devoid of forest and tree growth when the peace forest scheme was introduced in 1805 to protect the remnants of the Danish forests from overexploitation. The oldest beech grove in Bælum Sønderskov was planted in 1900. A smaller part of the blue route runs through the wetland area east of the forest. From here, there is a stunning view of the deciduous forest in the high terrain. The surface of the trail consists of forest roads, paths, and grass tracks in field edges. In some places, the trail can be muddy in wet weather.
