The Mill Lake in Klokkeholm

This route goes all the way around Klokkerholm Møllesø, Vendsyssel's largest lake. The nature trail around the lake is about 2.5 km long, and a hike along the stones lasts about 1 hour. Klokkerholm Møllesø constitutes a natural area of about 10 ha. The area is protected, but it is allowed to fish in the western part of the lake under special provisions. The lake has a rich population of birds and fish and is well-visited by many anglers. The lake likely originated as a glacial lake, and for centuries, there was a mill located at the western end of the lake, powered by water from the "mill pond." The "mill pond" was drained in 1914 to the great dismay of many local residents. For many years, efforts were made to restore the lake, and it succeeded in 1979. After 65 years of drainage, the lake was restored with species. The lake is located just outside Klokkerholm town, whose area features numerous burial mounds and a fine church, Hellevad Church. In the area, you will also find the Burial Mound Trail, which takes you past 11 different burial mounds. South of Klokkerholm, Stentinget Byrhøj offers exciting stories from the Late Iron Age and the Viking Age. By Klokkerholm Møllesø, there is an information map with a brochure holder that is regularly replenished by locals. By the lake, there is also a shelter area with a fire pit, toilet, and running water.
