The Himmerland Heaths

The area offers beautiful nature, a rich wildlife, and history. The heaths today cover only a small part of what they did in the 19th century and consist of moraine hills covered by drifting sand. They are now left uninhabited, but over time, humans have influenced the landscape with burial mounds, cultivation of land, and a network of roads and hollow ways. The substrate in the heaths consists of grass and trails, and the terrain is hilly. In the heaths, you can experience a rich plant and animal life, and especially the rare and endangered butterfly, the Heath Butterfly, has caught the attention of many. The Heath Butterfly breeds on the plant Devil's-bit Scabious, which has one of its few Danish habitats in the heaths. Therefore, much of the nature management in the area aims to promote the growth conditions for Devil's-bit Scabious, and thus the living conditions for the Heath Butterfly, while also ensuring as diverse a flora as possible. There are several parking lots associated with the trails.
