The cultural history in the Norring forests

Welcome to the cultural history of the Norring forests. The area has primarily an impressive and very dense concentration of burial mounds. Unlike the cultivated land, there has been no deep plowing and soil treatment here, which is why the burial mounds in the forests are quite well preserved. There is a large interconnected path network in the forests that comes very close to the burial mounds. The forests are owned by Frijsenborg Estate, which has a total area of about 4.3 km2 – the estate owns almost 49 km2 of forest, making it one of the country's largest private forest districts. The 33 protected and still visible burial mounds in the Norring forests clearly testify to a more settled tribe in the late Middle Ages and not least the Bronze Age (1700 – 500 BC). The mound group "Tinghøje" on the southern side of the Norringure forest gives a beautiful impression of how the mounds over time gathered in groups on the landscape's highest part, around 70 meters above sea level. The place name "Tinghøje" was likely first associated with the mound group in the Middle Ages.
