The routes are part of the pilgrimage paths from Nidaros in Norway and Vadstena in Sweden down through Europe to the ancient pilgrimage destinations, Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela. Throughout Denmark, the routes are marked with the familiar yellow arrows and the scallop shell.
