The entire area is protected and the central part around Østerø Lake is an internationally protected Natura 2000 area, which means that there are strict requirements for the preservation of nature.
There are several different hiking routes and trails in the area. Please note that during the breeding season, access is limited on "cross-cut" connecting paths. Year-round, there is full access to the long route, which is about 4.7 km.
