Eskilsø - Blue route

Welcome to the Trails on Eskilsø

Eskilsø is located in the National Park Skjoldungernes Land and is the largest island in Roskilde Fjord. There is neither a bridge nor a ferry to Eskilsø, but you can sail to the small harbor on the island's west side, which is the only legal access to the island. You are a welcome guest on the island, and Eskilsø's four trails are open for foot traffic, while the rest of the island is reserved for nature. The trails are walking paths without pavement. Accessibility may therefore vary with the season, water level, and plant growth. The foundation aims to maintain the trails several times a year. There are 4 marked routes on Eskilsø. They lead to good viewpoints, from which the routes return the same way. The shortest routes are the green route at about 1½ km and the red route at about 2½ km. The longest route, the yellow route, is about 4 km long but can be shortened by about ½ km each way via the blue route (see the map). The trails are marked with posts. In certain places, the trails pass through enclosures via gates and passages that must be closed again after passing. Eskilsø is owned by the Erick and Ingrid Struckmann Nature Preservation Foundation. The foundation was established in 1974 for the inheritance of Erick and Ingrid Struckmann and aims to buy, protect, and care for natural areas. The foundation bought Eskilsø in 1982. The island was previously owned by Selsø-Lindholm Estate. Eskilsø is an important habitat for many bird species that have had a refuge on the island's many undisturbed salt marshes over time. Therefore, the island is also protected by a nature preservation order from 1985 and is designated as a wildlife reserve and Natura 2000 area. The protection means that you are not allowed to walk on and along large parts of the island. The island's houses Eskilsøgård and Eskilsøhus are inhabited year-round. In consideration of the island's rich birdlife and the grazing animals, it is not permitted to bring dogs to Eskilsø.
