Hohøj Route (5 km round trip)

The Hohøj Route takes you through the idyllic Mariager as well as the scenic Alstrup Krat with Denmark's largest burial mound from the Bronze Age, Hohøj. The Hohøj Route is marked with red triangles.

Starting Point: There is free parking without time limit at Hohøj, Hohøj Skovvej 7, 9550 Mariager. Public transport connects to the Hohøj bus stop on Havndalvej.

Experiences: The forest floor in Alstrup Krat is teeming with ancient relics, though the passage of time obscures the life that has unfolded here over thousands of years. Several of the ancient relics in the area are contemporaneous. In the centuries before year zero, there was a small settlement near Hohøj from where a drovers' path led through the settlement's fields down to the meadows by Marenmølle Bæk, where livestock could graze. Today, we can still see the traces of the fields and paths as well as the place where the settlement once lay. In Albstrup Krat's atmospheric, twisted beech forest, a piece of landscape has been preserved almost undisturbed since ancient times, where the trees testify to ancient forestry. Most of Alstrup Krat is privately owned; you may walk on roads and paths from 6:00 AM until sunset. Dogs are welcome on a leash.
