A large part of all living beings on Earth are insects. Worldwide, there are up to 1 million different species of insects, and new species are still being discovered. In Denmark, we have around 18,000 species of insects. These tiny creatures have existed for several hundred million years, long before the first humans appeared on Earth. Insects are characterized by having a three-part body, an exoskeleton, and three pairs of legs, and they develop from eggs to larvae and finally to adults. Insects play a very important role in the ecosystem as food for, among others, fish, reptiles, mammals, and birds, or as predatory animals that help control pests. Others contribute to breaking down fungi and plant matter, releasing nutrients back into the soil, while insects like bees are important for flowers and plants to be pollinated and set seeds so new flowers can grow. Without insects, nature would look completely different. However, human impact on the Earth means that there are fewer and fewer insects because there is no longer room for wild nature, where many insects thrive best.
