Around the entire lake, a walking path has been established that is actively used by anglers, bathers, and nature hikers. Navnsø and its surroundings (approximately 100 hectares) are protected and remain as a preserved remnant of the large heath areas that covered large parts of northwestern Himmerland in the last century. The lake is a true heath lake with a sandy bottom, shallow depth, and clear, nutrient-poor water. This type of lake is called a lobelia lake after a plant that grows on the bottom. In July, the lake is surrounded by a belt of white lobelia flowers.
