The Å-stien – Mini Wetland Area came as an opportunity when Haastrupgaard offered to give citizens access to the mini wetland area he had just created. The Smidstrup-Skærup Local Council immediately seized this, and a working group along with local enthusiasts got to work. The path is an offer to all citizens of all ages and is also accessible for people with disabilities. The purpose of this mini wetland area is to limit nitrate runoff from the fields to Ulvemosebæk, Sønderbæk, and Gammelby Mølleå. Therefore, a shallow lake has been established, where bacteria and algae convert nitrate in the drainage water to nitrogen in the air before the water flows into the stream. Smidstrup Skærup School incorporates the area into its teaching.
