In 2021, Ishøj will get a new attraction: a 2.2 km long, completely unique art path.

The art path ARKENWALK has been developed by architect Kristine Jensen's office, artist Jeppe Hein, and the arts and culture agency Creator Projects.

Their project won a major project competition held by Ishøj Municipality, Realdania, and ARKEN in 2018.

To win the competition, the team – in fierce competition with three other teams of architects and artists – had to develop an idea for an artistic path and present a project that connects both artistically, architecturally, and economically.

“It will be an extremely exciting project – I am very much looking forward to it,” says the enthusiastic words from Ishøj's mayor, Ole Bjørstorp.

“Along the way, we have received many creative and innovative projects, and I am convinced that we have found the perfect winner. It is an innovative project of very high quality, which will use art and architecture to create the framework for a better outdoor life for our citizens here in Ishøj. I am very much looking forward to our art path being ready soon.”

ARKENWALK is a collaboration between Ishøj Municipality, Realdania, and the art museum ARKEN.

The purpose of the new 2.2 km long path is to better connect Ishøj as a nature and art town, while also making it easier for ARKEN's over 300,000 annual visitors to get from Ishøj Station to the art museum.

The path will begin at Ishøj Station and wind its way through both a heavily trafficked station square, a lively residential area, a dark tunnel, a quiet residential neighborhood, and a scenic beach park with meadows and lakes.

The ambition is for ARKENWALK to establish a cohesive urban space with a strong green and artistic character. An outdoor, engaging, and corporeal art experience, where the various areas of the city will be staged and complement each other as citizens move from Ishøj Station to ARKEN.

“ARKENWALK is a really good example of landscape architecture and art coming together to create a cohesive, functioning whole. The fun lanterns help to create wonder and experiences, while the project nicely focuses on the climate agenda,” says program manager Astrid Bruus Thomsen from Realdania.
