Today, the former sugar factory's main building serves as the town hall for Assens Municipality, which also owns the area. After the sugar factory closed, the Earth Basins have transformed into an exciting urban nature area that simultaneously tells of an important industrial history in Assens.
The area known as the Earth Basins is entirely man-made and reflects an important part of the history of the town of Assens.
The area was previously a flat salt marsh that was only ½ m above sea level. From 1884 to 2006, Assens Sugar Factory produced sugar from sugar beets. At the town hall, you can still see the factory's very prominent chimney.
