The westernmost point of Fur is Lille Knudshoved, and here the cliff and the fjord almost merge. The cliff is primarily made up of clay topped with a few meters of moraine clay and finally overlaid with meltwater sand. Above the cliff are remnants of the heathland that covered Nordfur around the year 1800. An ancient coastal cliff from the Stone Age forms the transition to the salt marshes to the south.
In clear weather, the view towards Salling and Mors is nothing short of magnificent. On the north side of Fur lies Knudeklinterne – the most impressive clay cliffs on Fur. Over a stretch of 600 meters, one can see how the clay and ash layers are pressed together in flakes and folds. The red hiking trail runs along the cliffs.
At low tide, it is possible to walk along the beach, but the route is marked at the top of the cliff, where the ground can be slippery due to the clay. From the top of Knudeklinterne, there are beautiful views towards Livø and Mors. And it is precisely this view that has prompted Realdania to take a closer look at the island. Knudeklinten is part of the initiative “Places in the Landscape,” where local forces in collaboration with Realdania develop simple architectural interventions aimed at enhancing and sharpening the experience of nature. On Fur, the project is called Diatoms, as it is specifically diatoms – that is, silica algae – that have inspired the design of three architectural lookout platforms made of corten steel.
The route is marked with red arrows. NOTE: Part of the route may be slippery in muddy weather.
