Even a few meters of height difference in the flat landscape of Tøndermarsk has had a huge impact on nature and people. Especially before dikes and pumps were used to control the water. Therefore, the towns of Tøndermarsk are built on the ridges, which are hill islands from the penultimate ice age and thus rise a little above the heaths from the last ice age. The town of Rørkær also stands out as a good example of a road village, where houses and farms were originally established along a single road.
