The Soldier's Forest was planted by the military in its time, while the area was a training ground for Tønder Barracks. Before, there were flat fields that provided neither cover nor hiding places for the soldiers. The western part of the forest has remained largely untouched since it was established between the two world wars, and today you can experience a species-rich and exciting forest with plenty of animals and plants. Along the forest's lakes and ponds, amphibians and reptiles thrive, and there is generally a basis for many exciting nature experiences.
