The Forest Route

The Skovruten is a 5.5 km long hiking trail established in collaboration between Horsens Municipality and the Nature Agency. The route runs through the new Rugballegård Skov, the old Åbjergskov, and along Bygholm Lake. Rugballegård Skov, located on the Nature Agency's land, was planted in 2022. The landscape is a mix of forest and open fields with ponds and streams.

The entire municipal forest surrounding Bygholm Lake is referred to as Åbjergskoven. Originally, the name only covered the southwestern part of the forest, while the eastern part was called Gammel Hestehave or Bygholm Lystskov. Planting has made the two forest areas a continuous forest totaling 99 hectares. The large trees seen in several places on the slopes down to the lake are remnants of the original forest that grew where agricultural activities were not possible.

Today, Åbjergskoven has merged with the new Rugballegård Skov, thereby forming the framework for a total urban forest area of 260 hectares.

The area offers plenty of opportunities for movement, whether it takes place on foot in walking or running, on a mountain bike on one of the many trails, or by boat on the lake.
