Køge

Køge is an old market town. The old town center has preserved its original layout. Around the square, there are many well-preserved and protected buildings. Køge Church is one of the most beautiful and best preserved Gothic church buildings in Denmark. Køge Museum covers the cultural history of Køge and its surroundings and is definitely worth a visit.

Gammelkjøgegaard

Gammelkjøgegaard is a manor located immediately west of Køge. It is currently owned by the Carlsen-Lange Foundation. The farm is known from the 15th century but may possibly have had a predecessor in "Gammel Køge". The foundation currently owns and manages 617 hectares of forest and 372 hectares of arable land and meadows along Køge Stream. Gammelkjøgegaard is surrounded by a park, which has one of the country’s largest collections of rhododendrons. The park is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 2 PM to 6 PM.

Gl. Køge Kirkeruin

North of Gammelkjøgegaard, there are few visible remains of an old church. Nearby, probably south of Køge Stream, was the medieval village of "Gammel Køge". But already in the Viking Age around the 900s, there was settlement in the area. Finds of jewelry from that time indicate that there was a Viking Age settlement on the northern bank of the stream.

Claras Kirkegård

The Carlsen family has its own family burial site at a quaint little cemetery on Åsen, consecrated in 1853 by N.F.S. Grundtvig, who himself was buried here in 1872 next to his second wife, Anna Marie, née Carlsen. Access to the cemetery is granted 2 days a year and otherwise upon request to the estate office. One can get an impression of the beautiful cemetery by peering through the wrought-iron gate. The Køge Stream path passes by.

Åsen

Åsen is the name of the forest located on Køge Ås between the town of Køge and the South Motorway. Large old beech and oak trees characterize the forest both on slopes and on the ridge. Åsen is particularly special in that there are about a dozen smaller areas that can be characterized as very significant natural forest areas.

Flådeegene

On the south-facing slope of the ridge, a number of old gnarled oak trees grow, the so-called Flådeege. They were planted around 1810 to provide oak timber for the reconstruction of the Danish navy, which was taken by the English in 1807.
