Søbygård Lake

The lake is located at the bottom of a valley, which was shaped like a tunnel valley during the Ice Age. Søbygård Lake is connected to the area by Granslev Stream and has the Gudenå system as a unifying element. The lake is a small, very shallow lake of 40 hectares with an average depth of 1 meter. The lake receives inflow from Møllebækken (to the east) and discharges into the Gudenå via Gjern Stream (to the west). Much of the lake is surrounded by forest (Sall Forest on the north side and Søbygård Forest on the south side) – particularly notable are the many ash trees in Sall Forest. Ash does not close the bottom nearly as tightly as, for example, beech, which allows a good deal of light to the plants on the forest floor.

There is access via paths and fields – it is possible to walk the 4-5 km around the lake, but the route is not marked, and it may be a bit difficult to find your way around. The easiest way to see the area is from the south side at Søbygårdsvej in Søbylunde. From there, one can walk east along a path through the forest. Here, you get a good view of the lake. The area is privately owned.
