Hammer Bakker - Pearls of the Hærvej

The Hærvejs Pearls are quality hiking loops located in connection with the Hærvejens hiking/cycling route. To become a Hærvejs Pearl, the route must be certified by either the Deutsches Wanderinstitut or the European Ramblers Association. Hærvejs Pearls are hiking loops that start and end at the same place.

The route is a varied journey around Hammer Bakker, where you will pass by some of the area's most beautiful natural areas, landscapes, and ancient monuments. The route primarily consists of natural paths and forest roads.

You will pass through significant hills and valleys covered with "rølle-bøge," which are old multi-stemmed beech trees that have arisen from pollarding and grazing. The trip also takes you past Pebermosen, which has formed due to peat extraction. The bog now has a free water surface and a hanging sack of sphagnum mosses.

Along the way, you will pass heaths with, among other things, heather and juniper bushes. You will also go through areas where the Danish Nature Fund, Danish Botanical Society, and Aalborg Municipality collaborate on the restoration of nature and biodiversity. The area is grazed as part of nature management with cattle, goats, and horses (dogs must always be kept on a leash). You will pass Tvillinge Høje, Bronze Age mounds, from which there is a view over the heath landscape.

Hammer Bakker has a rich wildlife. Among other things, the rare and threatened butterfly brown patchwing breeds here, and you may be lucky enough to see the marsh harrier or red-backed shrike.

Finally, it should be noted that the hiking loop passes by the Water Tower at Pitsvej 6, which is an old water tower that has now been converted into a lookout tower, with views from 70 meters above sea level.
