Pearls Bølling Lake

The Pearl Bølling Lake is an 11.6 km long hiking route around the reconstructed Bølling Lake.

Bølling Lake formed after the last Ice Age over 12,000 years ago. Over thousands of years, the lake developed into a high bog, which was later drained and used for peat extraction. In 2005, the lake was reconstructed in one of Denmark's largest nature restoration projects.

The route takes you both closely along the lake shore and up onto the surrounding highlands, from where there are captivating views over the lake and the varied landscape with meadows, bogs, and forests.

Experiences along the way

Along the way, you encounter not only beautiful nature but also stories about people, animals, and events that have left their mark on the area over thousands of years.

The hidden stories that lie within the landscape are communicated through listening stations, signs, telescopes, and play elements around the entire lake.

You can learn more about the lake's history while enjoying the view over the landscape, hear stories about the Tollund Man, listen to the tale of the Polak Works, and see a Bronze Age girl walking on stepping stones.

Fantastic birdlife by the lake

At Bølling Lake, you can experience many different birds. Throughout the year, there is a chance to see sea eagles, cranes, herons, both black and green woodpeckers, as well as kingfishers.

In the summer months, the marsh harrier often soars low over reed beds and fields, and you will be able to experience a multitude of small birds.

During migration outside of the summer months, the fish eagle sometimes passes by, and in the winter months, the marsh owl and male hen harrier are found at Bølling Lake.

Practical info

The entire route can be completed in ½ day (3-4 hours).

The route primarily follows paths along the lake and is mostly flat, but on the eastern side of the lake, there are some hills.

It is not wheelchair accessible, as there are also narrow paths.

If you feel like a longer hike, you can extend the route with a trip around Skallerund Lake. This route is just over 3 km.

How to get to and from the route

The route starts and ends at Klosterlund Museum, where there is free parking. Klosterlund Museum is located quite close to Engesvang, where there is a train station and shopping options.

Toilets and accommodation

There are toilets at Klosterlund Museum and at Dværgebakken.

The Pearl Bølling Lake is certified as a premium hiking route by Deutsche Wanderinstitut and is part of Denmark's Nature Trails – a national project that guides to scenic, well-marked, and communicated hiking routes.
