Ebberød Tour

The tour starts at Culture Snake, which winds its way around Rudersdal. This round trip in Ebberød is 3.6 km long. In 1892, the newly constructed Ebberødgaard was opened as a working and care institution for what was then referred to as "mentally disabled". The institution and the treatment of society's weakest faced much criticism over time, and in 1980, the institution was closed down, with newer modern treatment methods gaining ground.

The history of Ebberødgaard goes even further back. In the 1600s and 1700s, it was a profitable estate, partly due to the many artificially constructed fish ponds in Rude Skov, which supplied the court with fish for grand banquets.

Ebberødgaard's location by the forest and the fresh air made it an attractive country estate in the 1700s, at the end of the 1800s an obvious place to hide away the patients of the mental institution, and again from around the year 2000 onward it has become an attractive residential area with owner-occupied and cooperative apartments in several of the old institutional buildings.
