Description by the author

Skallerund Lake is a 3.6 km long route, starting at the Klosterlund Museum. The route can be taken either alone or as an extension of the Hærvejs Jewel Bølling Lake.

Experiences along the way

On the way to the lake, you will encounter traces of history, springs, hanging moss with peat and bog myrtle, and remnants of previous peat production. You can see memorial stones for local peat manufacturers and listen to stories about child laborers.

When you see Skallerund Lake, you will experience an idyllic atmosphere, like a quiet breath from a distant past, but the lake is only a few years old by nature's scale. The elevations around Skallerund Lake were formed during the Ice Age, but the lake itself was created through peat extraction in what was once known as Skallerund Bog.

Close to the lake stands a small thatched timber-framed building - the little museum, which once had a small collection including flint finds from ancient times. The small museum was established for this purpose in 1933-34 by peat manufacturer Martin Anchersen, and the collection is now housed at Klosterlund Museum.

Above the little museum lies one of Jutland's largest and best-preserved oak thickets.

Cutting and grazing have created an exciting forest of about 100 hectares with gnarled oak trees with multiple trunks in Stenholt Forest north of the lake. The forest is protected as an example of so-called coppicing, where trees were felled at the root to allow new shoots to grow from the stump.

In the forest, there are many other cultural traces: ancient burial mounds, stone circles, farm ruins, a decommissioned clay pit, and even a troll. See if you can find it!

From here, there is a connection to the Hærvejen.

After the round trip around the lake, where you may be lucky to find the rare carnivorous plant Rorippa, and lots of other life in nature, including bog myrtle, the route continues past a nice dog park and through the forest down to Kragelundvej, where it follows the Jewel Bølling Lake back to Klosterlund Museum.

Along the way, there is also a Stone Age hunt. See if you can find all 10 silhouettes!
