Tronholmen - Skovholmen

The nearby hiking trail along Strømmen, Tronholmen, and Skovholmen is a unique round trip in an area that provides both a view of the water and an insight into how Randers’ port has shaped the landscape over time.

Look forward to experiencing the old railway line, which has been uncovered and restored as a walking path. You pass the beautiful Strømmen Station, which today houses a gallery. Strømmen Station once served the port and the businesses that grew along the quays. From here, goods and materials were transported between the port, the city, the rest of East Jutland, and the rest of Denmark. On the railbed, you will go under the train tunnel at Grenåvej. Close to the tunnel, after passing the small wooden bridge, you can see the memorial to Carlo Randrup Thomsen, a local hero who was tragically shot there by the Gestapo in 1945. A signboard and a cross have been erected at the site.

In the early 1930s, the course of the Gudenå River through Randers Harbor was changed as part of a major expansion of the port. Millions of cubic meters of mud and earth were excavated, and the material was used, among other things, to create new islets by the harbor. Here, Tronholmen and Skovholmen emerged, which were used for many years as a landfill, industrial area, and port-related activities. Today, the area is much calmer, and Tronholm Park is a large recreational area with a playground, parkour course, scenic benches, and toilets.

You can also stop at the scenic bench at the top of Skovholmen. Here you have a beautiful view over Randers Fjord and towards the Romalt hills.

On the journey, one can experience traces of the port's industrial history, gaze over Randers Fjord, and follow the paths through green areas.

The route is marked with yellow arrows and forms a loop to the Randers Fjord Trail, which is marked with red arrows. Following the red arrows on the south side of the fjord will take you to Uggelhuse, via Romalt and Assentoft Bakker.
