Plaza de España is one of the landmarks of the capital, in the square is the Alcázar de Colón Museum, while the Museum of the Royal Houses is on Calle Las Damas a short walk from the square.
This esplanade is located on the eastern side of the colonial zone. A statue of Nicolás de Ovando, founder of Santo Domingo, stands here as a tribute to his achievements. The square is surrounded by exquisite colonial houses and restaurants catering to the elite.
At night, it is well-lit and polished by the tropical breeze blowing from the river and the sea, enveloping it with the best Dominican atmosphere possible. It is in this square that there is a plaque stating that UNESCO declared the colonial zone of Santo Domingo as Cultural Heritage.
