First Cathedral of America

The Metropolitan Cathedral Santa María de la Encarnación, or Primate of America, began its construction in 1523 and concluded in 1541. On February 12, 1546, at the request of Charles V, Pope Paul III granted it the status of Metropolitan Cathedral and Primate of the Indies, characterized by its structure made of Gothic form.
The Cathedral is composed of 12 side chapels, each with an individual history, also has three free naves and a central nave of about 54 meters in length, its architecture is distinguished by its baroque style where Gothic prevails. The first chapels were built between 1540 and 1550, the remaining eight date from 1650.
