Description

The Exhibition Bridge, also popularly known as the Calatrava Bridge or the Peineta Bridge, spans the Túria Gardens between the Paseo de la Ciudadella and the Paseo de la Albereda, in the city of Valencia.

The current bridge replaces an earlier one that was built to connect the city with the grounds of the Regional Exhibition. This was one of the first buildings in the city to use reinforced concrete and, like most of the exhibition buildings, it was in the modernist style. The flood of 1957 destroyed this bridge and it was replaced by another, more mundane one.
The current bridge was designed by engineer and architect Santiago Calatrava, between 1991 and 1995. It is made of high-strength steel and is painted the glossy white typical of his buildings. It rests on a single point, a huge arched beam that crosses the old bed of the Túria River. The arch — hence the reference to a comb or peineta in Spanish — has a height of 14 meters and contributes to the stability of the bridge, which is 26 meters wide and almost 131 meters long. The arch is inclined 70 degrees from the horizontal plane.
