The Mercat de la Boqueria is located in the middle of the busy Ramblas. It is a large covered market where you can find all kinds of food such as fruits and vegetables or fresh fish. The name 'Boqueria' comes from the old Catalan translation that would mean 'place where goat meat is sold'. The market opened its doors as early as 1840, although there had been a central market in Barcelona since the 13th century.
Even when the busy shopping street, Ramblas, was later built, this colorful marketplace continued to exist. In the 19th century, the iron fence around this market was built. It is not a weekly market as we know them. The market is open from Monday to Saturday from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM.
