Gothic Quarter

Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter) is the name for the oldest part of Barcelona. Here, the Romans founded their settlement Barci. Not much remains of it, except in the Historical Museum (Museu d'Història de la Ciutat) at Plaça del Rei, which is built on Roman ruins. The remains of those ruins can be viewed in the museum's basement. Among other things, you will see a laundry from Roman times, a winery, and residential houses. Pottery and jewelry found during the excavations are also on display.
Above ground, Barri Gotic is also very worthwhile. The name suggests that there are exclusively Gothic buildings. That is not entirely true, but there are many. The most striking is the large Gothic cathedral of Santa Eulalia, commonly known as La Seu, which was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. The church is dedicated to a girl who was shamed by the Romans by being displayed naked in the square. It was the middle of summer, but miraculously, snow fell on the girl to cover her nakedness. According to legend, she was then killed by the furious Romans.
