The best-preserved walled enclosure in Catalonia dating from the 14th century. It was built following the process of fortifications of the main towns ordered by Peter III the Ceremonious due to the war against Peter the Cruel of Castile. It has a perimeter of 1,500 meters, with about thirty towers. The material used was stone, mortar, and adobe in some places. In the corners of the towers, however, regular stone blocks were used. The enclosure consists of four sections and there were originally only four entrance portals located according to the cardinal points: the Sant Antoni portal, the Sant Francesc portal, the Sant Jordi tower-portal, and the Bové tower-portal. Recovery began in 1971.
