Talavera de la Reina is located 114 km from Madrid on the banks of the Tagus River, right at the point where it widens as tributaries flow into it. The river forms a sort of estuary here. The city is split in two by the river. There are three bridges that connect both parts.
Talavera has a temperate continental climate. The winters here are typically cold and damp. The summers are extremely hot. This is one of the cities with the highest temperatures in Spain.
The city is traditionally known for its ceramics. Additionally, the textile industry and livestock trade are important, especially pigs and sheep. A lot of vegetables and fruits are also grown here: watermelons, melons, tomatoes, and barley.
In recent years, the city has been thriving due to its strategic location along the future high-speed rail line from Madrid to Lisbon.
