The current basilica features both Renaissance and Baroque style characteristics. The ceramic decorations from the 16th to the 20th century are of immeasurable value. The basilica is sometimes referred to as the Sistine Chapel of Spanish Ceramics. The ceramics at the bases of the columns and in the side aisles date back to the 17th century. At that time, Talavera ceramics enjoyed great fame even in the American colonies. On the side of the Gospel, the genealogy of Christ is depicted, while on the side of the Epistle, scenes from the life of Our Lady are illustrated. Certain drawings are attributed by experts to students of El Greco.
