The Puente Viejo is the oldest of the three bridges over the Tagus. It is suspected that the bridge may be of Roman origin, but very little remains from that time due to the frequent floods and the fact that the bridge was partially collapsed by the swirling water. Work on the bridge continued until the end of the 15th century and the structure has remained largely unchanged since then. The last restoration dates back to 2002.
