Gósol is located in the northeast sector of the region and is flanked by the regions of Alt Urgell, Solsonès, and the municipality of Saldes. It is surrounded by imposing mountain ranges that descend from the passes of Teuler and Verdet, from the cliffs of Costafreda and the Coll de la Mola, the Sierra del Verd, the Ós pass, the Gallina Pelada, and Pedraforca. Its area has considerable altitude and very rugged relief, which leads to the predominance of typical high mountain agricultural crops (forages and seed potatoes), pastures, and forests of black pine, red pine, firs, and oaks. The village is surrounded by pastures; its basic economic activity is beef cattle raising, complemented by tourism.
The castle, perched on top of a hill overlooking the valley and the current village, speaks of its splendid past. Old Gósol grew around the castle thanks to a charter of population granted at the end of the 13th century by the barons of Pinós, lords of the place. The current village began to be built at the end of the 18th century when the old core was abandoned.
In 1906, Pablo Picasso visited Gósol and stayed all summer with Fernande. His time in Gósol influenced his painting, and the village keeps the memory of his stay in a small room, the Picasso Room, next to the ethnographic room that houses pieces of rural life.
The starting point for climbing Pedraforca and for numerous excursions, a large part of the municipality is included in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park.
