The ancient convent of La Merced was one of the convents that were built in the city of Málaga during the times of Isabel and Fernando. Its origin is found in the taking of the city. The Kings showed generosity towards those who had collaborated in the conquest of this stronghold. Among them was Alonso de Rivera, who was rewarded with a place between the hill of Gibralfaro and that of San Cristóbal, along the road that led to Vélez-Málaga. There was a hermitage that changed its dedication from San Roque to Santa Veracruz. Upon learning that the Mercedarian Order wanted to settle in the city, Rivera ceded the hermitage and its possessions in exchange for being the commander of the convent, a fact granted to them at the Provincial Chapter held on May 23, 1499, in Seville. Upon acceptance, the community moved to the location. However, due to its proximity to the coast and the constant danger of landings by Moorish corsairs in the area, the community requested a new location, which was granted to them near the Granada Gate. This new site was granted by Queen Juana through the Royal Provision of November 12, 1507.
