Sanctuary of Urkiola

The Sanctuary of Saints Antonios Abbot and Padua of Urquiola is a Catholic temple located on the hill and port of Urquiola, in the Biscayan municipality of Abadiano, in the Basque Country. It is one of the most revered sanctuaries in the province and one of the oldest. It is located in the heart of the Urkiola Natural Park, next to one of the historical routes that connects the Cantabrian coast with the Castilian plateau and surrounded by an exuberant nature in which the limestone walls of the Duranguesado mountains stand out as a background, with the Amboto as the highest height, where Basque mythology locates the main abode of its maximum deity, Mari.
The current building, the third of which is known, is an unfinished building of neomedieval style that began to be built in 1899 and was consecrated in 1933. This building, together with a small bell tower, which was erected in 1870, the rectory, the old hospital and the inn, make up the religious complex that is complemented by two old and small hermitages, that of Santo Cristo and that of Santa Polonia, a via crucis and calvary built in 1943, and the small cemetery of the rural neighborhood.
