In San Sebastián, the sea dances and the air sings. To be more precise: this is what the forces of nature do at the foot of Monte Urgull, one of the two mountains protecting the most beautiful bay in Spain from the wildness of the Bay of Biscay. Steel and granite transform waves into fountains here, and storm winds into a thundering symphony. El peine del viento, it’s called, or ‘Comb of the Wind’. It is the masterpiece of Basque artist Eduardo Chillida, who anchored three colossal abstract sculptures in corten steel to the rocks and introduced perforated natural stones in the dyke, causing the seawater to spray upwards. The interplay of man, matter, and nature is so overwhelming during a storm that the police close the walkway between mountain and sea for safety reasons.
