The Disaster of Oroquieta is the victory achieved by General Moriones over the troops of Charles VII of Bourbon in the Third Carlist War, on May 4, 1872. The Duke of la Torre, in charge of directing the Northern army in April 1872, entrusted the command of the column, which was to maneuver on the extreme left of the theater of operations, to General Domingo Moriones, who, marching to meet the Carlists led by Carasa, learned on May 2, upon arriving at Etxarri-Aranatz while conducting a reconnaissance, that the enemy leader was near Madoz and Astiz, occupying highly advantageous positions. In view of this, he overnighted in Lekunberri, from where he perfectly covered the left of the army and was in a position to pursue the enemy at his reach. On the 3rd, he learned that Carasa expected to move from Saldias to Ezcurra, and, always covering the left, went to occupy the latter village, causing the Carlist general to retreat to Aranaz upon learning of his enemy's movement.
