The Pancorbo gorge is an important and historic passage located in the Obarenes Mountains in Burgos, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León in Spain. A necessary passage to enter the Castilian plateau from the north of the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic coast of the European continent. It is known as the Gateway to Castilla. It is included in the Natural Space of the Obarenes Mountains and in the area of the Mountains of Miranda de Ebro and Ameyugo.
The Obarenes Mountains rise like a rocky wall between the upper Ebro valley and Bureba, the forecourt of the Castilian plateau. The Oroncillo River carves its way through this immense wall on its journey to the Ebro through a narrow gorge that becomes the natural passage between these two large geographic units. This passage has been used since ancient times by all those who needed to cross from one side to the other of this natural wall; all kinds of emigrations, human, animal, and plant, have crossed through this narrow corridor.
