The late Romanesque parish church Nuestra Señora del Azogue in the small town of Puebla de Sanabria in the northwestern Spanish province of Zamora in the region of Castile and León is located at the highest point of the place.
The settlement already existed in the Visigothic period, but nothing is known about a possibly existing predecessor building; however, a large number of gravestones were found during excavations in 1995 below the church floor. The approximately 1000-meter-high and sparsely populated region was recaptured from the Moors in the 9th/10th century, and the border between the Christian and Islamic spheres of influence on the Iberian Peninsula was pushed up to the height of the Duero. The present church was built around 1170; however, it has been slightly altered several times since then.
