The State Public Library in Oviedo began its journey in 1942, when it was installed in a dependency of the Women's Institute of Secondary Education as one of the libraries dependent on the Coordinating Center. Initially, it fulfilled the dual role of the institute's library and public library. In 1947 it moved to premises in Calle San Vicente, sponsored by the General Directorate of Archives and Libraries and the Provincial Council. However, it soon became clear that the new facilities were insufficient for the amount of funds, so, once it had become a Provincial Public Library under the Ministry of Education, the adaptation of the Toreno Palace began, moving there in February 1958, together with the Coordinating Center of Libraries and the Provincial Historical Archive. In that year the Library did not exceed 15,000 volumes. [1]
