The Royal Monastery of San Benito was located in Sahagún. It was a very important monastery during the Middle Ages, with its possessions stretching from Tierra de Campos to Liébana and Segovia. It was one of the main centers of the reform of Benedictine monasteries when the Cluniac reform was introduced in the Iberian Peninsula. The decline of the monastery began in the 15th century, coinciding with the founding of the San Benito Monastery in Valladolid and the reform implemented there. The disappearance of the monastery was also the result of the continuous struggle with the town of Sahagún for power over the population, which led to the monastery being set on fire several times due to the uprisings, and the disappropriation in the 19th century.
