Peredo Palace

The Palacio de Peredo or Palacio de Viveda, known by the locals as the palace of the golden chon, is a late Renaissance mountain house from the seventeenth century, with additions from the eighteenth century, located on a hill [1] in Viveda from which the Besaya valley and the hamlet located around the tower-house of La Barca were dominated. It was built by order of Jorge de Peredo, then governor of Ponferrada, and his consort María de Velarde y Polanco. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest on February 26, 1982,[2] in 2003 the city council of Santillana, its current owner, rehabilitated it through its school-workshop to incorporate the Dinosaur Park and dedicate it to cultural events. The main effects of the rehabilitation were the removal of a series of houses and sheds attached to the palace, within its fortified perimeter, and the installation of a glass dome as a covering for the inner courtyard.
