The Sevilla City Council is one of the four public administrations with political responsibility in the city of Seville, alongside the General State Administration of Spain, the Junta of Andalusia, and the Provincial Council of Seville.
The historic building that houses the City Council is one of the most notable examples of Plateresque architecture. It is located in Plaça Nueva. Construction began in the 15th century by Diego de Riaño, who executed the southern sector of the City Hall, the arch connecting to the Franciscan monastery, and two floors covered with Plateresque reliefs featuring representations of historical and mythical figures, heraldry, and emblems alluding to the founders of the city, such as Hercules and Julius Caesar. This building was renovated in the 19th century by Demetrio de los Ríos and Balbino Marrón, who designed a new main façade facing Plaça Nueva, in a neoclassical style. In the expansion project, the following sculptors modeled and directed the carving work, in order: Pedro Domínguez López, José Ordóñez Rodríguez, and Manuel Echegoyán. At the same time, they reorganized the interior around two courtyards and a grand staircase.
