Viar

The Viar River [1] is a river in southern Spain, a right tributary of the Guadalquivir River. It originates in Puerto Cañada, in the Extremadura municipality of Monesterio, on the northern slope of Sierra Morena. It has a length of 124 km, of which more than half belong to the province of Seville. Upon entering this province, it supplies the El Pintado Dam, which has a capacity of 212 hm³ and was built in the mid-1940s. After the dam, it travels about 65 km until it reaches its mouth in the Guadalquivir River, previously passing through the Melonares dam, located in the town of Castilblanco de los Arroyos. Therefore, it crosses the entire southern slope of Sierra Morena before reaching the Guadalquivir Valley. Until the mid-1950s, its waters fed into the main river near the town of Cantillana, which is the only locality it passes through; currently, it flows into Villaverde del Río, about four kilometers further west than before.
